Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has highlighted plans to develop economic links with Indonesia’s Riau Islands as part of Singapore’s strategy to connect its business ecosystem with opportunities in Southeast Asia. PM Wong made the remarks at the inaugural DBS Asia Future Forward Conference in Singapore on 12 October 2026, during a dialogue with DBS Group Chief Executive Officer Ms Tan Su Shan.

PM Wong said Singapore was building business ecosystems that connect multinational corporations, local suppliers, research capabilities and skilled workers. He explained that linking these ecosystems with the wider region could enhance their competitiveness and connect businesses with additional market opportunities.

“That is why we are developing links with the Riau islands in Indonesia,” PM Wong said.

He also cited the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone and connections with Vietnam and Thailand as part of Singapore’s regional economic strategy. These initiatives reflect the approach outlined during the discussion: developing capabilities in Singapore while connecting them with opportunities in neighbouring economies.

The dialogue addressed Singapore’s economic positioning amid changes in the global order and rapid advances in artificial intelligence. PM Wong emphasised the importance of developing new capabilities and working with regional partners as Singapore seeks to remain competitive.
