Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Indonesia’s President Prabowo Subianto outline plans to deepen cooperation in trade, defence, energy, and human capital development during official talks in Jakarta.
JAKARTA, 6 November 2024 – At a joint press conference held at the Merdeka Palace, Singapore’s Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong, alongside Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, reaffirmed their commitment to a closer partnership across multiple sectors. Prime Minister Wong expressed appreciation for President Prabowo’s hospitality, marking his third visit to Indonesia this year and his first as Singapore’s Prime Minister. The meeting underscored both leaders’ intent to build upon the work of their predecessors and elevate the Singapore-Indonesia relationship.
During the discussions, both leaders highlighted the successful implementation of the Defence Cooperation Agreement and outlined plans for increased collaboration in military exercises and personnel exchanges. On the economic front, they discussed opportunities in trade and investment, with a particular focus on digital technology and healthcare sectors. Prime Minister Wong noted that Singapore remains a committed partner to Indonesia’s growth, recognising the potential for collaboration in areas critical to both nations’ futures.
Prime Minister Wong also detailed ongoing discussions about joint initiatives in food and energy security. Both leaders agreed on the importance of sustainable agriculture and are exploring clean energy projects, including cross-border energy exports and carbon capture technology. These initiatives are expected to drive economic growth and environmental resilience across Southeast Asia.
Human capital development was also a focal point, with Singapore pledging support for training and exchanges among students, professionals, and government officials from both countries. Prime Minister Wong emphasised the depth of friendship between Singapore and Indonesia, extending beyond government to the business sector and people-to-people connections.
Addressing the global context, Prime Minister Wong noted that Singapore and Indonesia share strategic perspectives and aim to maintain friendly relations with both the United States and China. Both leaders underscored the value of ASEAN unity as a stabilising force, committed to fostering peace and prosperity in Southeast Asia.
Prime Minister Wong expressed gratitude for the productive discussions with President Prabowo and invited him to continue these conversations at the upcoming Leaders’ Retreat in Singapore.
