STPI Singapore presents Eko Nugroho’s exhibition exploring identity, connection and digital life.
Eko Nugroho’s STRANGE MONSTER VIEW is on view at STPI, a Singapore-based workshop and contemporary art gallery specialising in print and paper, until 10 October 2026. The exhibition presents new works by the Indonesian artist based on his observations of Singapore, exploring identity, perception and belonging in a digitally connected society.
Held at STPI’s gallery at 41 Robertson Quay, the exhibition grew from Mr Nugroho’s second residency at the institution in 2025. His works combine influences from street art, graffiti and comics with masked figures and hybrid characters, while drawing on everyday experiences in Singapore, including local culture and the use of smartphones and screens.
The exhibition offers visitors a close look at how Mr Nugroho turns ordinary observations into visual stories. Works such as WE WATCH BEHIND THE GRASS consider the discomfort of being watched, while WE ARE REAL TOURIST and NOW EVERYONE IS LOST draw on experiences of tourism, technology and contemporary urban life. Another work, I SEE INDEPENDENCE, takes inspiration from Singapore’s National Day fireworks.
Mr Nugroho said his work is closely connected to everyday life. “My works are indeed largely inspired by everyday life, by what’s happening today. For me, artists represent their time, their era,” he said.
The exhibition also highlights the printmaking and papermaking processes developed through Mr Nugroho’s work with STPI. New works include experiments with mokulito, or wood lithography, pulp painting and embossing, giving the exhibition a range of textures and formats.
STRANGE MONSTER VIEW continues Mr Nugroho’s relationship with STPI following his 2013 exhibition We Are What We Mask. He has held residencies at the STPI Workshop in 2012 and 2025.
Admission to STPI is free. The gallery is open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 7pm, giving visitors until 10 October to see the exhibition at Robertson Quay. STPI is also offering free guided tours of STRANGE MONSTER VIEW, with selected Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday sessions.
