The agreement, signed at MUIS on August 8, 2024, strengthens bilateral trade opportunities by recognizing halal certifications between Indonesia and Singapore.
ON August 8, 2024, Indonesia and Singapore took a significant step toward enhancing their cooperation in the halal industry by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Halal Product Guarantee Cooperation. The signing ceremony took place at the Office of Majlis Ugama Islam Singapore (MUIS), symbolizing the commitment of both nations to facilitate and expand trade in halal-certified products.
The MoU was signed by Muhammad Aqil Irham, Head of Halal Product Guarantee at the Ministry of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia (RI), and Kadir Maideen, Chief Executive of MUIS. The event was further dignified by the presence of key officials, including Masagos Zulkifli Bin Masagos Mohamad, Singapore’s Minister for Social and Family Development, Second Minister for Health, and Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs, as well as Suryo Pratomo, the Ambassador of Indonesia to Singapore.
The MoU, which will come into force on October 17, 2024, establishes mutual recognition of halal certifications and logos between the two countries. This agreement is expected to streamline the process for halal-certified products from Indonesia to enter the Singaporean market, and vice versa, thereby opening up new bilateral trade opportunities. The initiative reflects the growing importance of the halal industry in global trade and underscores Indonesia and Singapore’s shared commitment to promoting halal products.
Singapore has also signed similar MoUs with several other countries, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, and Morocco, further cementing its position as a key player in the global halal market.
