MINISTER KARNAVAIN EMPHASISED JAKARTA’S POTENTIAL TO RIVAL GLOBAL CITIES LIKE NEW YORK, SYDNEY, AND MELBOURNE IN ECONOMIC PROMINENCE.

Indonesia’s Minister of Home Affairs, Tito Karnavian, shared his vision for Jakarta to emerge as a leading economic centre akin to global counterparts such as New York City in the United States, as well as Sydney and Melbourne in Australia.

Speaking at a working meeting with the House of Representatives (DPR) at the Parliament Complex in Jakarta on 13 March 2024, Minister Karnavian expressed the aspiration for Jakarta to excel in various sectors, including economy, services, and banking.

The minister highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts between the DPR, the Regional Representative Council (DPD), and the government to elevate Jakarta into a world-class or global city, with competitiveness matching that of developed cities worldwide.

Minister Karnavian emphasised the government’s willingness to engage in discussions regarding the Bill on the Special Region of Jakarta (RUU DKJ) in line with Law Number 3 of 2022 concerning the National Capital (UU IKN), ensuring alignment with existing laws and regulations.

Dr. Supratman Andi Agtas, Chairman of the Legislative Body of DPR, echoed Minister Karnavian’s sentiments, emphasising the need for Jakarta’s development to extend beyond its role as a national economic hub, envisioning it as a major megalopolitan city at both national and global levels.

Dr. Agtas underscored the significance of integrated urban planning, envisioning the growth and development of Jakarta in conjunction with surrounding areas like Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, Bekasi, and Cianjur to form agglomeration zones supporting Jakarta’s status as a global economic powerhouse.
