Jakarta hosts bilateral workshop on vessel seaworthiness, aiming to strengthen international maritime safety standards and avoid port detentions
In a continued effort to uphold international maritime safety standards and prevent ship detentions at foreign ports, the Transportation Attaché of the Indonesian Embassy in Singapore held a vessel seaworthiness workshop titled “Stay Compliant, Stay Sailing: International Shipping Without Detention” at Movenpick Hotel Jakarta City Centre on Thursday, 26 June.

The workshop represents a tangible outcome of the renewed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on 3 February 2025 between Indonesia’s Directorate General of Sea Transportation and the Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) of Singapore. The agreement strengthens bilateral cooperation in maritime safety and compliance across the region.

Indonesian Ambassador to Singapore, Suryo Pratomo, who attended the event, reaffirmed the importance of the initiative. “The quality and seaworthiness of Indonesian-flagged vessels directly impact regional logistics and the smooth flow of maritime trade, particularly through the Singapore Strait—one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes,” he noted. He also emphasised the embassy’s role as the only overseas Indonesian mission authorised to conduct vessel inspections and issue certifications, supporting over 100 Indonesian seafarers daily.
Director General of Sea Transportation, Muhammad Masyhud, highlighted the strategic cooperation between the two nations as members of the Tokyo MoU, a key regional framework for effective Port State Control (PSC) across the Asia-Pacific. “This collaboration enhances maritime safety, safeguards marine environments, and ensures fair working and living conditions onboard,” he said.
Transportation Attaché Wahyu Ardhiyanto concluded that the forum aims to develop shared strategies to tackle PSC challenges and improve the global reputation of Indonesian-flagged vessels. The event was also attended by the Chief Executive of the MPA Singapore and other key maritime stakeholders from both countries.
