Minister of Communication and Informatics Budi Arie Setiadi outlined strategies for media companies to navigate the evolving landscape shaped by the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology during the 2024 National Press Day commemoration event held on 19 February 2024. Pak Setiadi emphasised the importance of innovation in business processes to sustain competitiveness, urging media companies to explore new avenues for subscriber acquisition and user engagement through premium access models.
Addressing attendees during the “National Convention of Mass Media,” Pak Setiadi highlighted the current phase of digital disruption faced by mass media, emphasising the pivotal role of AI development in shaping the industry’s trajectory. He underscored the need for media companies to embrace AI technology as a means to optimise operations, enhance creativity, and diversify service offerings, including through channels such as instant messaging and video content.
In addition to embracing AI technology, Pak Setiadi stressed the significance of up-skilling employees to equip them with the necessary capabilities to navigate technological advancements effectively. He emphasised the importance of fostering a culture of innovation within media organisations to drive the creation of new products and services, leveraging emerging mediums such as podcasts to meet evolving consumer preferences and behaviours.
Pak Setiadi expressed optimism regarding the opportunities presented by AI-driven digital disruption, asserting that proactive adaptation to technological advancements can position media companies for growth and resilience in the face of industry evolution. Citing statistics from the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA), which indicated a notable increase in global press industry revenue despite ongoing digital disruption, Pak Setiadi underscored the potential for continued growth and innovation within the mass media sector.
