Indonesia is set to strengthen its position as a leading sport tourism destination through the Geopark Run Series 2026–2027, a nationwide running event that connects participants with some of the country’s most remarkable geopark destinations. Organised across four iconic locations — Ijen Geopark in Banyuwangi, Ciletuh Geopark in Sukabumi, Minang Geopark in Bukittinggi, and Belitong Geopark in Belitung — the series offers runners an opportunity to experience Indonesia’s geological wonders while promoting sustainable tourism and environmental awareness.

More than a conventional race, the Geopark Run Series combines fitness, travel, culture, and conservation into a single experience. Participants will run through diverse landscapes ranging from volcanic highlands and coastal cliffs to cultural landmarks and pristine beaches. Along the routes, runners will also be introduced to local traditions, culinary experiences, and community activities that reflect the unique character of each destination. The event is designed to showcase Indonesia’s geoparks not only as natural attractions but also as living cultural landscapes with rich histories and biodiversity.

The series will begin with the Ijen Geopark Run in Banyuwangi on 23 August 2026, followed by the Minang Geopark Run in Bukittinggi on 25 October 2026, the Ciletuh Geopark Run in Sukabumi on 6 December 2026, and conclude with the Belitong Geopark Run in Belitung on 18 April 2027. Together, the four events are expected to attract thousands of participants from across Indonesia and abroad, further supporting local tourism industries and encouraging greater appreciation for the country’s geopark destinations.

Beyond promoting healthy lifestyles, the Geopark Run Series also aims to generate economic opportunities for local communities. By attracting visitors to the host destinations, the event is expected to support small businesses, hospitality providers, creative industries, and tourism operators. The initiative reflects Indonesia’s growing focus on quality tourism experiences that balance economic development with environmental conservation and cultural preservation.

As sport tourism continues to gain popularity worldwide, the Geopark Run Series 2026–2027 demonstrates how athletic events can become powerful platforms for destination promotion. By bringing together runners, travellers, and local communities, the series offers a new way to experience Indonesia — one that celebrates movement, nature, culture, and sustainability in equal measure.
