The book launch celebrated the literary contributions of Indonesian migrant workers in Singapore, highlighting their personal stories and aspirations
On 25 May 2025, the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia (KBRI) in Singapore hosted the launch of Di Bawah Bayang-Bayang Patung Merlion, an anthology written by members of the Ikatan Persaudaraan Pekerja Migran Indonesia (IPPMI). Supported by the embassy, the event marked a significant moment for the Indonesian migrant community in Singapore, offering a platform for literary expression and self-reflection.

The anthology featured writings by Indonesian citizens residing and working in Singapore, including migrant workers, students from Universitas Terbuka (UT), and learners at the Community Learning Centre (PKBM) based at the Indonesian School in Singapore (SIS). Through essays and stories, the authors shared their personal experiences, hopes, and challenges, providing insight into life abroad as part of the Indonesian diaspora.
The launch was attended by Rima Diniah, Technical Staff of the Labour Attaché, and Bianca Simatupang, Acting Attaché for Education and Culture at the Indonesian Embassy. In her remarks, Ms Diniah commended the migrant community’s initiative, highlighting the work’s emotional depth and values of resilience and perseverance. Ms Simatupang also underscored the importance of promoting literacy among Indonesians overseas, positioning the event as part of Indonesia’s broader cultural diplomacy efforts.

The event featured readings by the authors, who shared excerpts from their work and discussed the inspirations behind their writing. Themes of longing, adversity, and determination resonated strongly with the audience, creating a heartfelt and engaging atmosphere.
The anthology is expected to inspire other Indonesian migrant workers globally to express themselves through literature and the arts, affirming their presence and creativity beyond their roles in the workforce.
