The 2024 ASEAN University Games in East Java will unite 4,000 to 5,000 athletes from 11 nations across 21 sports, spanning from 25th June to 6th July, 2024.
The 2024 ASEAN University Games (AUG) is poised to be a major sporting event in East Java, as confirmed by Rector of Universitas Negeri Surabaya (Unesa) Prof. Dr. Nurhasan. Scheduled from 25th June to 6th July 2024, the event is expected to draw between 4,000 to 5,000 participants from 11 ASEAN member countries.
Prof. Nurhasan highlighted Indonesia’s proud history as a host of AUG, having previously hosted the event five times since its inception in Chiang Mai, Thailand in 1981. These hosting duties occurred in 1982, 1990, 2004, 2014, and now in 2024.
“This year’s AUG will feature athletes from Indonesia, Malaysia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, Timor Leste, Brunei Darussalam, Thailand, Singapore, Cambodia, and the Philippines competing in 21 different sports,” he stated.
The sports contested include Futsal, Petanque, Volleyball, Tennis, Swimming, Sport Climbing, 3X3 Basketball, Judo, Handball, Wushu, Bridge, Chess, Athletics, Badminton, Archery, Beach Volleyball, Sepak Takraw, Taekwondo, Pencak Silat, and Karate.
“The competitions will be spread across several locations involving the East Java Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI) and nine universities, both in Surabaya and Malang,” he added.
In Surabaya, Unesa will host events such as Futsal, Petanque, Volleyball, Tennis, Athletics, and Basketball. Meanwhile, KONI East Java will oversee Swimming and Sport Climbing.
“In Malang, Universitas Negeri Malang (UM) will host Badminton, Archery, and Beach Volleyball, while Universitas Brawijaya (UB) will accommodate Sepak Takraw and Taekwondo,” he detailed.
Mr Muhammad Arif Al Ardha, Coordinator of AUG 2024, further emphasised that the Opening Ceremony will take place at the International Basketball Arena, located at Unesa Campus 2 in Lidah Wetan, Surabaya.
“The Opening Ceremony will be attended by athletes, coaches, and officials from participating countries, as well as senior officials from the ASEAN University Sports Council (AUSC),” he added.
Notable guests expected to attend include the Minister of Youth and Sports (Menpora), the Director General of Higher Education (Ditjen Dikti), the Central Management of the Indonesian Student Sports Board (PP BAPOMI), federations and sports organisations from national to local levels, local governments, and other relevant stakeholders.
