Swiss National Day 2026 Marks 75 Years of Indonesia–Switzerland Diplomatic Relations
JAKARTA, Indonesia – The Embassy of Switzerland in Indonesia and Timor-Leste commemorated Swiss National Day 2026 with a reception in Jakarta, marking the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Switzerland. The event brought together government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, business leaders, and partners to celebrate the longstanding bilateral partnership and reaffirm cooperation across multiple sectors.
The reception served as both Switzerland’s National Day celebration and a milestone reflecting seven and a half decades of diplomatic engagement between the two countries. The occasion also carried special significance as it marked the final Swiss National Day reception hosted by the Ambassador of Switzerland to Indonesia and Timor-Leste, H.E. Olivier Zehnder, before the conclusion of his diplomatic posting.
In his address, Ambassador Zehnder reflected on the evolution of Indonesia–Switzerland relations over the past 75 years, describing the anniversary as representing “more than a number on a calendar” but the result of decades of sustained cooperation, dialogue, and people-to-people exchanges.
He said the bilateral relationship had expanded beyond traditional diplomacy to include cooperation in trade, investment, sustainability, education, science, culture, and innovation. While institutional agreements remained important, Ambassador Zehnder emphasised that the strength of the partnership ultimately rested on the individuals and organisations that had transformed diplomatic ties into genuine friendship.
Reflecting on the anniversary, Ambassador Zehnder highlighted three guiding principles, trust, innovation, and partnership, as the foundation of Switzerland’s engagement with Indonesia. He noted that trust was built through consistency and predictability, innovation encouraged societies to imagine better solutions for shared challenges, while partnership recognised that complex global issues required countries to work together despite their differences.
Drawing parallels between Switzerland and Indonesia, he observed that although both countries differed significantly in geography and scale, they shared an understanding that unity did not require uniformity. Instead, diversity, compromise, and cooperation remained important sources of resilience, creativity, and national strength.
The Ambassador also referred to this year’s Swiss National Day theme, which encouraged reflection on maintaining hope and cooperation amid global challenges. He reaffirmed Switzerland’s longstanding commitment to dialogue, humanitarian engagement, and constructive international cooperation.
Looking back on his tenure in Indonesia, Ambassador Zehnder expressed his appreciation to the Government of Indonesia, the diplomatic community, Swiss businesses, colleagues, and friends for their trust and collaboration throughout his assignment. He described his experience in Indonesia as personally meaningful and acknowledged the warmth, generosity, and professionalism he had encountered during his posting.
Concluding his remarks, Ambassador Zehnder encouraged both countries to continue strengthening bilateral cooperation in the years ahead. He expressed confidence that the next chapter of Indonesia–Switzerland relations would continue to be guided by mutual trust, shared values, and practical collaboration across government, business, education, and cultural exchanges.
The reception featured cultural performances by Indonesian singer Andre Hehanusa and the Batavia Madrigal Singers, alongside Swiss-inspired cuisine prepared by the culinary and service team of AYANA Midplaza Jakarta. The programme reflected the close cultural and people-to-people ties that have complemented the two countries’ diplomatic partnership over the past 75 years.
