At the Indonesia International Sustainability Forum (ISF) 2024, Indonesia reaffirmed its dedication to achieving net-zero emissions by 2060 through a transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy. Key to this transition, as emphasised during the forum, is collaborative efforts between nations.

One significant partnership highlighted during ISF 2024 was between Indonesia and Singapore, focusing on green electricity trade and power grid interconnectivity. This partnership was formalised last year with the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between both governments. Singapore committed to supporting Indonesia’s renewable energy manufacturing sector, including the production of solar panels and battery energy storage systems (BESS).

During ISF 2024, Singapore announced an increase in its quota for importing low-carbon electricity from Indonesia, raising it from 2 GW to 3.4 GW. The Energy Market Authority (EMA) of Singapore has granted conditional approval to five companies to begin electricity exports, with transmission expected to commence by 2028. This move is part of Singapore’s strategy to decarbonize and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

Singapore’s Second Minister for Trade and Industry, Dr. Tan See Leng, highlighted that international collaboration is essential in reaching decarbonization goals. Singapore’s strategic decision to import electricity from neighboring countries aligns with its plans to increase its total electricity imports from 4 GW to 6 GW by 2035.

The cooperation between Indonesia and Singapore is expected to benefit both nations, promoting renewable energy industries in Indonesia while supporting Singapore’s energy transition. This project is set to boost Indonesia’s manufacturing sectors, such as solar panel and battery production, while ensuring a sustainable electricity supply to Singapore.
