The Indonesian and Singaporean governments are set to establish cooperation in family development to improve social welfare in both nations. This initiative was discussed during a meeting between Indonesia’s Minister of Population and Family Development (Mendukbangga) and Head of BKKBN, Wihaji, and Singapore’s Minister for Social and Family Development, Masagos Zulkifli, in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Minister Wihaji highlighted that despite differences in population size, governance systems, and cultural backgrounds, both countries share a strong commitment to family development. The collaboration will include research on family policies, particularly in urban settings, and may involve other Asian nations, such as the Philippines.

The cooperation will also cover capacity-building for service providers, improving community nutrition, fostering social entrepreneurship among Indonesian youth, and sharing best practices in urban management. These efforts aim to strengthen family resilience and well-being in both countries.

Minister Masagos Zulkifli emphasised Singapore’s preventive approach to social issues, prioritising early intervention through programmes like family coaching. He explained that Singaporean family coaches proactively engage with new families, assessing their needs based on housing conditions and socioeconomic factors to provide appropriate support.

A formal agreement between Indonesia and Singapore is expected to be signed to solidify these collaborative initiatives in family development.
