BAPAK DIAN TRIANSYAH DJANI, SPECIAL SENIOR ADVISOR TO THE MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS, ADVOCATES FOR BOLSTERING THE MULTILATERAL SYSTEM WITHOUT DOUBLE STANDARDS TO ADDRESS GLOBAL TRADE CHALLENGES.

Bapak Dian Triansyah Djani, the Special Senior Advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, highlighted the significance of reinforcing the multilateral system without any double standards in addressing various global trade issues. Speaking on 5 March 2024, Pak Djani stressed the need to enhance the credibility of institutions like the World Bank, IMF, and WTO through reform.

According to Pak Djani, the current state of the multilateral trading system and dispute resolution mechanisms at institutions like the WTO often fall short of expectations, leading many nations to lean towards regionalism. He underscored the importance of ensuring proper implementation of international law without discrepancies.

Despite the appeal of regionalism, Pak Djani acknowledged the challenges it poses, particularly in maintaining regional resilience amidst global disruptions. He emphasised the importance of addressing these challenges to effectively navigate the complexities of the contemporary global landscape.

In the context of Indonesia’s regional leadership role as the chair of ASEAN last year, Pak Djani emphasised the country’s commitment to fostering regional stability in Southeast Asia. During its tenure, Indonesia facilitated discussions on various thematic issues, including interstate rivalries, signalling a departure from previous reluctance to address such matters openly.

Pak Djani’s remarks underscore Indonesia’s proactive approach to addressing global trade challenges by advocating for a strengthened and more equitable multilateral system while navigating the complexities of regional dynamics in Southeast Asia.
