Series of community events marks Indonesia’s 80th Independence Day, strengthening unity abroad
In a warm display of community spirit, the Indonesian Ambassador to Singapore, Suryo Pratomo, officially inaugurated the Series of Competitions to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of Indonesian Independence. The opening ceremony took place at the Sekolah Indonesia Singapura (SIS) Hall and was attended by officials and staff of the Indonesian Embassy, representatives from various Indonesian community organisations in Singapore, and enthusiastic participants.

The initiative is part of the Embassy’s ongoing efforts to foster stronger ties and unity among Indonesians living in Singapore. In his remarks, Ambassador Suryo Pratomo conveyed his appreciation to the organising committee, participants, and the wider Indonesian community for their commitment to maintaining the spirit of togetherness, mutual cooperation, and patriotism, despite being far from home. He urged all Indonesians in Singapore to embrace the competitions not merely as contests but as a meaningful way to reinforce solidarity and national pride, while upholding sportsmanship and the values of unity.
Following the official launch, the event featured a lively volleyball exhibition match between community representatives and Embassy officials and staff, cheered on by an enthusiastic audience that added to the festive atmosphere. The friendly match symbolised the close bonds and camaraderie between the Indonesian Embassy and the Indonesian community in Singapore.
The competitions will continue every weekend throughout July 2025, offering a range of activities from sports like volleyball and badminton to arts and traditional games. Events are designed to include adults, children, and families alike, further strengthening connections among Indonesians from all walks of life.
Through this commemorative series, the Indonesian Embassy hopes to nurture a deep sense of patriotism, revive the spirit of gotong royong (mutual cooperation), and provide a positive platform for Indonesians in Singapore to connect, support one another, and celebrate the nation’s enduring unity.
The Embassy encourages all Indonesian citizens in Singapore to join in these meaningful activities, celebrating Indonesia’s independence and the resilient bonds that unite Indonesians wherever they may be.
