Foreign Ministry assures that voting for the 2024 General Elections at overseas polling stations is well-managed despite minor issues.

The Foreign Ministry of Indonesia has confirmed that voting for the 2024 General Elections at polling stations abroad is progressing smoothly. Ministry spokesperson Bapak Lalu Muhamad Iqbal stated that while there have been some minor issues, they have been promptly addressed by Indonesian envoys and overseas electoral organizers in each country. The affirmation comes amidst the ongoing process of overseas voting ahead of the Election Day set by the General Elections Commission (KPU) on February 14, 2024.

Despite the Election Day set by the KPU, overseas electoral organizers have been allowed to open polling stations earlier. However, the counting process will align with the schedule in Indonesia, occurring on February 14–15. Pak Iqbal emphasized the importance of Indonesian representatives providing support and assistance to ensure the smooth execution of the election process overseas. While acknowledging that envoys are not election organizers, Foreign Minister Ibu Retno Marsudi has urged them to monitor and guarantee the success of the elections for Indonesian voters abroad.

Bapak Hasyim Asy’ari, head of the KPU, reported positive feedback regarding the conduct of elections at overseas polling stations. He expressed satisfaction with the smooth progress, particularly in locations such as Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) and Jeddah (Saudi Arabia). Asy’ari assured that the KPU would thoroughly review any procedural errors identified at overseas voting stations and take necessary corrective actions to maintain the integrity of the electoral process.

The assurance from both the Foreign Ministry and the KPU reflects their commitment to ensuring a fair and transparent electoral process, both domestically and abroad. Despite challenges, efforts are underway to facilitate the exercise of voting rights for Indonesian citizens living overseas. The monitoring and resolution of issues demonstrate the government’s dedication to upholding democratic principles and ensuring the inclusion of all eligible voters in the electoral process.
