As part of his state visit, President Prabowo Subianto named a new orchid hybrid Paraphalante Dora Sigar Soemitro, honouring his mother and strengthening Indonesia–Singapore ties
SINGAPORE, 16 June 2025 — A special moment marked the state visit of President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, at Singapore’s Parliament House on Monday, as he named a newly cultivated orchid Paraphalante Dora Sigar Soemitro in honour of his late mother. The naming ceremony was held as part of Singapore’s long-standing orchid diplomacy tradition and reflected the deepening bilateral ties between the two nations.

The solemn and meaningful event was attended by CEO of Singapore National Parks, Ms Hwang Yu-ning, who personally introduced the orchid’s characteristics to President Prabowo. She also presented him with a copy of the book Singapore’s Orchid Diplomacy, highlighting the cultural and diplomatic significance of the occasion.
Paraphalante Dora Sigar Soemitro is a striking and highly floriferous hybrid. It produces upright flower spikes measuring 30 to 40 cm in length, each bearing 8 to 12 large, outward-facing blooms approximately 7 cm in diameter. The star-shaped petals and sepals are soft pink with delicate rose-pink veins that gradually fade to white at the edges.
Its standout feature is a bold, forked lip with a golden-yellow base dotted in deep maroon, creating a visually dramatic yet harmonious contrast. The orchid’s elegant form and vibrant colouring serve as a tribute to both personal legacy and diplomatic friendship.
The orchid naming not only honoured President Prabowo’s beloved mother, Dora Sigar Soemitro, but also symbolised the enduring friendship and growing cooperation between Indonesia and Singapore. Through this floral gesture, both nations reaffirmed their commitment to deepening collaboration amid regional and global challenges.
