MINISTER SANDIAGA UNO EXPRESSES CONFIDENCE IN SURPASSING PROJECTED INTERNATIONAL TOURIST ARRIVALS FOR 2024, AIMING TO SURPASS PRE-PANDEMIC FIGURES.

Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno has expressed optimism regarding the prospects of international tourist arrivals in 2024, aiming to exceed the target of 14.3 million and surpass the pre-pandemic figure of 16.1 million. Minister Uno conveyed his optimism during a press briefing held here on 21 March 2024, highlighting the potential for a significant rebound in tourism following Indonesia’s smooth and peaceful conduct of the 2024 General Elections.

Minister Uno emphasised the country’s robust appeal and potential to attract international visitors, underpinned by its diverse range of high-quality tourism products with sustainability aspects. He noted an encouraging trend in tourist arrivals to key destinations such as Jakarta and Bali, signalling a positive resurgence in the tourism sector.

The minister previously set ambitious targets for the circulation of money in the tourism sector, aiming for IDR 3000 trillion (around US$191.064 billion) in transactions for the year. Additionally, domestic tourist trips are projected to range between 1.25 billion and 1.5 billion, with transactions in the creative economy sector targeted at IDR1,187 billion (around US$75.59 million).

To achieve these ambitious targets, Minister Uno stressed the importance of adaptation, collaboration, and innovation measures, particularly emphasising the need for proactive initiatives from regional governments. He outlined key steps, including the development and enhancement of tourist attractions, curation of high-quality regional events, formulation of comprehensive travel itineraries covering various destinations, and extensive promotion of regional tourism.

The minister’s optimism reflects a broader commitment to revitalising and expanding Indonesia’s tourism and creative economy sectors, capitalising on the country’s rich cultural and natural heritage to attract a diverse array of international visitors. With proactive strategies and concerted efforts at both the national and regional levels, Indonesia aims to position itself as a premier destination for global travellers, fostering sustainable growth and economic resilience in the process.
