The Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) commenced its 23rd capacity-building training programme on “Future-Proofing AI: Building Human-in-the-Loop Governance Skills for Rights-Respecting AI” in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The three-day programme brings together policymakers, human rights practitioners, and AI governance professionals from across Asia and Europe.

Opening remarks were delivered by Nezar Patria, Vice Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs of Indonesia; Wawan Masudi, Dean of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences at Universitas Gadjah Mada; Andri Hadi, ASEF Governor to Indonesia; and Zhang Lei, Deputy Executive Director of ASEF. The keynote address was delivered by Undral Ganbaatar from UNESCO.

The training programme focuses on strengthening governance frameworks for artificial intelligence that uphold human rights principles. Through workshops, discussions, and collaborative exercises, participants are expected to explore practical approaches to implementing human-in-the-loop systems and rights-based AI governance.

The initiative is delivered in partnership with the Center for Digital Society UGM, with contributions from international partners including the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law and various government agencies from Asia and Europe.

Discussions throughout the programme are expected to address the intersection of AI development and human rights, with an emphasis on translating policy principles into actionable governance practices. The training also aims to strengthen cross-regional collaboration and knowledge exchange in addressing emerging challenges in digital governance.

The programme reflects growing international efforts to ensure that advancements in artificial intelligence are aligned with ethical standards, accountability, and inclusive development.
