MINISTER TRENGGONO HIGHLIGHTS THE POTENTIAL FOR INDONESIA AND VIETNAM TO BECOME KEY PLAYERS IN GLOBAL FISHERIES THROUGH STRATEGIC COLLABORATION.

Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono expressed optimism about the fisheries collaboration between Indonesia and Vietnam, envisioning the two nations as future leaders in the Asian and global fisheries sectors. Speaking at the Meet Indonesia event in Nha Trang, Vietnam, on 21 March 2024, Minister Trenggono emphasised the complementary strengths of both countries in marine resources and fisheries expertise.

Minister Trenggono underscored the importance of concrete fisheries investments in realising the agreed collaboration between Indonesia and Vietnam. By leveraging Indonesia’s abundant marine resources and Vietnam’s proficiency in fisheries cultivation and processing, the collaboration aims to enhance environmental sustainability and economic growth while meeting global demand for fisheries products.

The minister highlighted the significance of fisheries investments as part of broader cooperation between Indonesia and Vietnam to position themselves as global suppliers in the marine and fisheries sectors. This strategic partnership extends beyond regional boundaries, contributing to the expansion of both countries’ presence in the global fisheries market.

Recent data from the third quarter of 2023 indicates positive trends in fishery investments in Indonesia, totalling IDR 9.56 trillion (approximately US$610.14 million). These investments span various sectors, including fish processing, fish farming, marketing, fish catching, and fisheries services, reflecting the diversification and growth potential of the Indonesian fisheries industry.

With fish processing leading the sector in terms of investment, followed closely by fish farming and marketing, Indonesia’s robust fisheries investment landscape presents promising opportunities for collaboration with Vietnam and further expansion into the global fisheries market.
