The Ministry of Transportation of Indonesia introduced the Electronic Seafarers Identity Document (e-SID) to support Indonesian seafarers’ rights in Singapore
The Ministry of Transportation’s Directorate General of Sea Transportation (Kemenhub) officially launched the Electronic Seafarers Identity Document (e-SID) at the Indonesian Embassy in Singapore. The initiative aims to enhance support for Indonesian seafarers by ensuring they receive their rights while working abroad.
Mr. Hendri Ginting, the Director of Shipping and Seafaring at Kemenhub, explained that the Seafarers Identity Document (SID) is an official identity card tailored for seafarers, in accordance with international standards set by the ILO Convention No. 185. The e-SID is designed to facilitate the mobility of seafarers across international waters, enabling easier access to ports and ensuring their rights are recognised and protected.
During the launch, Mr. Hendri highlighted that Indonesia is one of the largest suppliers of maritime labour globally, with over 36,000 Indonesian seafarers currently registered in Singapore. The e-SID provides multiple benefits for Indonesian seafarers, including visa-free access to international ports, official recognition of their maritime status, and streamlined repatriation processes. Additionally, the use of biometric fingerprint technology enhances security and data protection for seafarers.
The launch ceremony also saw the symbolic handover of the e-SID to a representative group of Indonesian seafarers working in Singapore. Mr. Hendri emphasised that the Indonesian government is committed to improving the welfare of seafarers, ensuring they receive fair and professional service throughout the process. He encouraged seafarers to report any issues they encountered during the application process to the relevant authorities for immediate resolution.
This move aligns with Indonesia’s commitment to international labour standards, as stipulated in the ILO Convention No. 185, ratified by Indonesia as part of its ongoing efforts to protect its seafaring workforce.
