Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs met with Singapore’s Minister for Manpower to discuss technology cooperation and human resource capacity building

INDONESIA’s Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Mr. Airlangga Hartarto, met with Singapore’s Minister for Manpower, Mr. Tan See Leng, during the 2nd Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) meeting on Wednesday, August 21st, 2024. The discussion focused on enhancing cooperation in technology and the development of human resource capacity between the two countries.

The ministers discussed the implementation of the Tech:X Program agreement, which provides young technology professionals from Indonesia and Singapore the opportunity to gain one year of work experience in their respective technology industries. Following the signing of the Technical Arrangement on the Indonesia-Singapore Tech:X Program on June 7th, 2024, on the sidelines of the 14th Ministerial Meeting of Indonesia – Singapore Six Bilateral Economic Working Groups (MM 6WG), both parties are preparing the process of accepting the first batch of Tech:X Program participants through a pilot project program.

Mr. Airlangga also expressed his desire to strengthen cooperation between Indonesia and Singapore in various fields, including education and capacity building in the semiconductor sector. He invited Singapore to support Indonesia’s efforts to develop a microelectronics-skilled workforce, which is essential for establishing a semiconductor ecosystem in Indonesia. Additionally, discussions included expanding cooperation in the Batam, Bintan, and Karimun (BBK) regions, covering sectors such as energy and submarine cables.

Singapore continues to be a key economic partner for Indonesia, being the largest foreign investor with over USD 15 billion invested in 2023 alone, representing approximately 30 percent of Indonesia’s total foreign investment. The ministers also discussed other key issues, including the 2nd Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) Ministerial Meeting and Related Events, the Indonesia-Singapore Six Bilateral Economic Working Groups bilateral forum, Indonesia’s accession plan to enter the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development  (OECD), and Indonesia’s participation in the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CP-TPP).
