At the ASEAN Cyber Resilience Forum, Minister Budi Arie Setiadi emphasised the importance of AI technology in combating emerging cyber threats across the region
INDONESIA’S Minister of Communication and Information, Mr. Budi Arie Setiadi, highlighted the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) in bolstering regional cybersecurity efforts on ASEAN Cyber Resilience Forum: AI & Cognitive Warfare in Emerging Cyber Threats held in Jakarta on Tuesday, September 24th, 2024.
“The development of AI offers significant opportunities in detecting cyber threats quickly and accurately. Governments in various countries, including ASEAN nations, have utilised AI to enhance cybersecurity,” stated Minister Budi Arie,
He pointed out that the global rise in cyber threats has become increasingly alarming. In 2023 alone, 340 million individuals were affected by 2,365 cyber incidents, which included phishing, malware, and Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks. He noted that AI technology offers critical advantages, such as accurately detecting threats, swiftly analysing vast amounts of data, and identifying suspicious cyber activities.
Several ASEAN countries, including Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand, have already implemented AI technologies to reinforce their cybersecurity frameworks. In Singapore, for example, GovTech has integrated AI within its cybersecurity operations centre, offering advanced threat detection and response capabilities.
Minister Budi Arie urged the Indonesian AI ecosystem to further develop its cybersecurity efforts, aiming for a safe and productive digital space. He also called on stakeholders to enhance digital literacy across the nation, particularly in rural areas, where awareness of cybersecurity remains low. Promoting digital literacy is crucial to building a secure digital society, which is one of the pillars of Indonesia’s digital transformation.
