THE Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Ministry revealed its intention to highlight Indonesian cinema at several international film festivals slated for this year. Bapak Ahmad Mahendra, the ministry’s Director of Film, Music, and Media, disclosed that Indonesia’s first stop would be the Hong Kong International Film and TV Market (FILMART), scheduled from March 10 to 14. This initiative marks the 19th overseas endeavour to promote Indonesian films and culture since last year.

Indonesia’s participation in the 2024 FILMART will include the establishment of the Indonesia Pavilion, featuring networking events, panel discussions, and market screenings under the theme “Discover Indonesia”. Fifteen production houses and two Indonesian film festival organisers will be actively engaged in these activities to introduce national films and bolster the domestic creative industry’s growth.

In addition to FILMART, Indonesian films will grace other prestigious events such as the Udine Far East Film Festival in Italy, Cannes Film Festival in France, and Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival in South Korea this year. Over 50 Indonesian films are expected to be showcased across these international platforms, reflecting Indonesia’s commitment to solidifying its presence in the global film landscape.

The Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Ministry’s active involvement in various international festivals underscores its dedication to advancing Indonesian cinema on the global stage. According to Bapak Ahmad Mahendra, this participation serves as a testament to the ministry’s unwavering support for the Indonesian film industry’s development and recognition worldwide.

Ibu Vivian Idris, Deputy for Festival and Event Organising at the Indonesian Film Agency (BPI), expressed confidence that Indonesia’s robust presence in international festivals would elevate domestic filmmakers’ visibility and reputation globally. She commended the ministry for its steadfast support and commitment, acknowledging its pivotal role in driving progress within the Indonesian film industry.
