INDONESIA’S Minister of Investment and Head of the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), Mr. Rosan Roeslani, revealed that Singaporean companies have expressed a strong interest in investing in the new capital city, Nusantara (IKN), located in East Kalimantan. The announcement was made during a press conference in Jakarta on Tuesday, September 2nd, 2024.

Mr. Rosan mentioned that during his recent visit to Singapore, he met with representatives from Sembcorp, a leading energy and urban development company. Sembcorp expressed their intention to invest approximately USD 60 million in the construction of a solar power plant in Nusantara. The proposed solar power plant, or solar cell, is expected to have a capacity of around 5-6 megawatts.

In addition to Sembcorp, Raffles Education Center also showed interest in investing in the development of Nusantara. Mr. Rosan was surprised by the warm reception he received from Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and his team, who discussed Singapore’s ongoing and future investment plans in Indonesia. Minister Rosan emphasised that Singapore has been Indonesia’s largest investor for the past decade, making the visit crucial for understanding their investment preferences moving forward.

As part of Indonesia’s broader vision for 2045, the relocation and development of the capital city, IKN, are seen as strategic steps toward achieving more inclusive and equitable economic growth, particularly in Eastern Indonesia. The new capital is intended to serve as a central symbol of the nation and play a key role in realising the country’s long-term economic ambitions.
