Singaporean Foreign Minister, DR. Vivian Balakhrisnan, reaffirmed commitment to enhancing Indonesia-Singapore cooperation during a meeting with Indonesian Defence Minister Prabowo Subianto in Jakarta.
Singaporean Foreign Minister (FM) Dr. Vivian Balakhrisnan met with Indonesian Defence Minister Prabowo Subianto at the Ministry of Defence in Jakarta on Tuesday 23rd April 2024, to affirm their commitment to strengthening Indonesia-Singapore cooperation.
Minister Prabowo initiated a conversation by mentioning the upcoming government transition in Indonesia on 15th May 2024. Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has decided to step down from his position, to be replaced by his deputy, Mr. Lawrence Wong.
During the closed-door meeting, Minister Prabowo and Dr. Balakhrisnan agreed that the close relationship between Indonesia and Singapore currently needs to be reinforced, especially since both countries ratified/enforced three important agreements simultaneously last month: the Defence Cooperation Agreement (DCA), the Flight Information Region (FIR) adjustment agreement, and the extradition agreement. They believe that the two countries can explore deeper cooperation opportunities in other sectors, such as defence industry, military operations and exercises, and education.
At the Ministry of Defence office, Dr. Balakhrisnan was accompanied by Singapore’s Defence Attaché for Indonesia Colonel Melvin Gan, and Singapore’s Ambassador to Indonesia Mr. Kwok Fook, while Defence Minister Prabowo was accompanied by Acting Secretary General of the Indonesian Ministry of Defence Mr.Donny Ermawan Taufanto.
Besides meeting Minister Prabowo, Singapore’s FM also met with Minister Prabowo’s brother, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, who is also the CEO of Arsari Group, along with his daughter, Rahayu Saraswati Djojohadikusumo.
