Bali is preparing itself for the G20 Summit at the end of the year and much has been done to spruce up the facilities and amenities available on the island. IndoConnect compiles the latest news on what is on offer in the 4- to 5-star class of resorts with that villa-style touch at the Island of the Gods!

TANAH GAJAH
by Hadiprana

The outdoor garden view

MOORED amongst the rice paddies of Bali’s spiritual heart at Ubud, the idyllic 20-key property was once the private family estate of noted Indonesian architect Hendra Hadiprana.

Built in the 1980s as a holiday home for the legendary designer and transformed into a resort in 2004 when the architect’s imagination conjured the possibility of another estate nearby, this Leading Hotel of the World came back into the Hadiprana family’s fold in the January of last year.

The Tanah Gajah resort’s extensive art and antique collection, gathered over decades, remains a pillar of the property and strolling the grounds is a rewarding immersion in Balinese art and sculpture.

The secluded five-hectare estate also features two dining destinations, both with uninterrupted views of some of Ubud’s most iconic scenery, an indulgent spa that also makes the most of the view, and a spacious swimming pool with mythic gajah (elephant) statues standing guard over the water. Rooms are in traditional Balinese style with semi-outdoor bathrooms and several with private plunge pools.

The ultra exclusive Apurva Kempinski Bali is welcoming guests during the G20 Summit year with a brand campaign entitled ‘Unity in Diversity’ – a celebration of the rich cultural diversity, heritage and philosophy of Indonesia’s seven main regions.

These will be part of the guest experiences throughout the resort, which portray mystical stories from those regions, their holistic  treatments, culinary diversity, craftsmanship and traditional games.  Top of this experience must also be staying at the resort’s exclusive one-, two- and three-bedroom Villas which are designed for complete privacy. This is a collection of 43 beautifully appointed private villas, nestled in tropical gardens on the clifftops of Nusa Dua. They are named after the mighty kingdoms that once ruled over Indonesia.

All of the villas offer private plunge pools and spacious outdoor terraces, while the larger options also feature kitchens and rooftop dining areas. Wood and stone-clad interiors are meticulously finished with rattan bamboo furniture, woven Sumba textiles and handmade woodcarvings from Bali and Java, giving guests a flavour of Bali’s rich history of design and creativity.

“We have made tremendous efforts to showcase Indonesian heritage in the eyes of the world by incorporating the best local craftsmanship, philosophy and materials into the interior design,” said Rudy Dodo, founder of Jakarta-based Trivium Design Group, which is responsible for interiors throughout the resort.
