Indonesia’s North Kalimantan Governor Zainal A. Paliwang presented the province’s strategic investment opportunities to diplomats and business representatives during the 2026 National Working Meeting and Consultation of the Indonesian Employers Association (Apindo) in Makassar, South Sulawesi, on 4 August.

Speaking to international delegates and business leaders, Governor Zainal highlighted North Kalimantan’s investment potential across green energy, infrastructure, downstream industries, marine resources, manufacturing and agribusiness. He said the province’s strategic location bordering Malaysia and the Philippines, together with its status as one of Indonesia’s youngest provinces, offers investors first-mover advantages in an emerging market with relatively limited competition. He also reaffirmed the provincial government’s commitment to facilitating investment and streamlining business processes.

Green energy remains central to North Kalimantan’s investment strategy. Governor Zainal highlighted the Mentarang Induk Hydropower Project and the Kayan River hydropower development, which are expected to support the Green Industrial Park Indonesia (GIPI), one of the country’s flagship sustainable industrial developments.

The province is also promoting investment in major infrastructure projects, including a planned Type B regional hospital in Tanjung Selor and a proposed toll road linking the provincial capital with Nusantara (IKN), Indonesia’s future capital.

To strengthen its industrial economy, North Kalimantan is seeking investment in seaweed processing facilities in Tarakan and Nunukan, an organic fisheries industrial estate, and a cooking oil processing plant. Agribusiness opportunities include cocoa and coffee cultivation in Malinau, alongside premium local products such as Krayan Mountain Salt and organic Adan rice.

Through the business matching forum, Governor Zainal said North Kalimantan aims to build long-term partnerships with international investors to accelerate regional development, diversify its economy and support Indonesia’s sustainable growth agenda.
