Hands-on programme inspires Singapore’s future healthcare professionals.
Raffles Medical Group welcomed 15 Secondary 3 students from Swiss Cottage Secondary School to Raffles Hospital for a two-day Learning Journey on 22 and 23 June 2026, providing hands-on exposure to healthcare careers and the workings of Singapore’s healthcare system.
The programme began with a welcome by Lilian Yew, Chief Nurse at Raffles Medical Group, who shared the organisation’s commitment to quality patient care, nursing excellence, and developing the next generation of healthcare professionals.
Students also met teams from Raffles Medical Group’s Medical Social Work Department and Inpatient Operations, learning how doctors, nurses, allied health professionals, and support teams collaborate to deliver integrated patient care.
A key highlight was a series of practical workshops covering basic cardiac life support (BCLS) and emergency responses to choking incidents. Through guided demonstrations, participants gained fundamental first-aid knowledge while building confidence in responding to medical emergencies.
The Learning Journey also included tours of the hospital’s 15 Specialist Clinics, Raffles Dental, and 24-hour Call Centre, giving students a broader understanding of the diverse clinical and non-clinical careers that support healthcare delivery.
The programme concluded with a fireside chat featuring Dr Tan Joo Peng, Deputy General Manager of Raffles Medical (Singapore Healthcare); Aaron Raymond Lim, Associate General Manager at Raffles Medical Group; and Lih-Yi Sujata Soo of Raffles Medical Group. The speakers discussed healthcare leadership, career pathways, and the evolving needs of Singapore’s healthcare sector while answering students’ questions.
By combining practical learning with direct interaction with healthcare professionals, the initiative provided students with valuable insight into careers in medicine and healthcare. As demand for skilled healthcare workers continues to grow globally, programmes such as this help inspire young people to explore meaningful careers dedicated to improving health outcomes and serving their communities.
