Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi expressed his optimism about the transfer of airspace management, including Flight Information Region (FIR), from Singapore to Jakarta over the Kepulauan Riau (Kepri) and Natuna regions. He shared his views during a visit to Jakarta Air Traffic Service Center at Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Tangerang, Banten, on Friday (12/4).

Budi highlighted that the transfer of FIR Kepulauan Riau and Natuna into FIR Jakarta would have a positive impact for Indonesia, especially in terms of state revenue. He also emphasized the potential increase in state revenue from navigation service fees within the additional FIR Jakarta area.

The Minister affirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring safe and effective management of Indonesian airspace, in line with national interests and international civil aviation service standards.

He also commended the post-agreement realignment of airspace management with the Singaporean government on March 21, 2024. Through Airnav, Indonesia now controls the airspace in Kepulauan Riau and Natuna which are under FIR Jakarta, a development that received praise during the visit.

Furthermore, Budi mentioned the negotiations regarding FIR with Singapore had started in 1995. He cited examples such as domestic flights from Jakarta to Natuna, which previously required navigation contact with Singaporean flights upon entering Kepulauan Riau. Similarly, international flights passing over the Natuna Islands had to contact Singaporean flights before being served by AirNav Indonesia. With the FIR realignment, both domestic and international flights will now be directly served by AirNav Indonesia, eliminating the need for Singaporean involvement.
